Alexey Platonov graduated from the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute, later he became a candidate of physical and mathematical sciences, laureate of the I.V. Kurchatov Prize and the author of 30 published works on theoretical nuclear physics.

Since 1992, he headed the Russian Research Institute for Public Networks (RIPN), since 2010 - JSC Technical Center Internet. In 2012-2016, he was a member of the Board of the Smart Internet Foundation. Currently, he is a member of the Smart Internet Foundation Board. He took direct part in the creation of the MSK-IX Internet traffic exchange system and was the Director of the ANO Center for Interaction of Computer Networks MSK-IX.

Alexey Platonov is one of the founders of the RELARN, and also led the project to create an all-Russian backbone network for science and education RBNet within the framework of the interdepartmental program National Network of Computer Telecommunications for Science and Higher Education.
