Markus Kummer
Markus Kummer has made many contributions to Internet Governance as a Senior Advisor to the DiploFoundation and the Geneva Internet Platform. He previously served on the Board of ICANN. He was also a Chairman of the Internet Governance Forum Support Association (IGFSA), Vice Chairman of the Internet Society Switzerland, and was a member of the Swiss Government-appointed Expert Group on Cyber Risk Research.
Since 1979, Markus Kummer has worked as a career diplomat in various positions at the Swiss Foreign Ministry, including service at the Swiss Embassies in Portugal, Austria, Norway and Turkey, as well as at the Swiss Mission to the United Nations in Geneva. From 1998 to 2002, he was seconded to the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). He joined the UN after serving as e-envoy to the Swiss Foreign Ministry and participating in the first phase of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), where he chaired the negotiating groups on human rights and Internet governance. At the UN, he became executive coordinator of the Working Group on Internet Governance and then headed the Secretariat of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF), responsible for preparing and organizing the first annual meetings of the IGF.
